A Nortel anunciou um novo foco de negócios visando o aumento da participação
no mercado de redes Ethernet super-rápidas para aplicações de vídeo que
demandam muita largura de banda. A iniciativa estratégica, batizada de Redes
Metro Ethernet, foi anunciada pelo presidente e CEO da empresa, Mike
Zafirovski, e será coordenada por Philippe Morin como presidente.
“O futuro da Nortel depende da nossa liderança contínua em inovação e, com as
novas redes Metro Ethernet, unimos nossas melhores tecnologias, apoiadas por
um aumento inicial de investimento em pesquisa e desenvolvimento”, afirma
Zafirovski. “Em seu cargo anterior, como diretor geral da área óptica, Morin
fez a área evoluir cerca de 24% no ano passado e atingir receita de US$ 1,2
bilhão. Estou confiante que ele ampliará essa liderança por meio das redes
Metro Ethernet.”
O CEO da Nortel avalia que, com o rápido desenvolvimento da IPTV, IMS e outras
aplicações, os prestadores de serviço enfrentarão enormes desafios em termos
de largura de banda em todas as redes – sem fio, com fio e por cabo. “A Rede
Metro Ethernet é o primeiro passo para deixar a Nortel numa posição de
vantagem para ganhar esse novo espaço essencial no mercado”, comenta
Zafirovski.
A estratégia da Nortel se baseia no crescente uso da Ethernet como protocolo
padrão de comunicações por LAN e WAN para eliminar o gargalo de largura de
banda entre as redes de fibra óptica de alta velocidade e as metro networks
que atendem consumidores e empresas. As Redes Metro Ethernet da Nortel
enfocarão os recursos de comunicação sem fio usando sua solução Metro Ethernet
